How Games140 works

Your thinking rating

Each of the seven thinking areas has a Games140 rating. Everyone starts at 1500; it rises when you do better on a daily puzzle than a player of your rating is expected to, and falls a little when you do worse. Only the daily puzzle counts, once per game per day. It's a Games140 rating, not an IQ score.

The idea

Games140 is organized around the 7 thinking areas. Every game trains one or more of them, and comes with a Coach that explains why the better move was better. You don't just play; you practise the same skills the Thinking Test covers, and watch your own scores change.

The 7 thinking domains
Working Memory vs. Recall — these sound alike but are different abilities: Working Memory is holding and juggling information in your mind right now (like keeping a running count); Recall is storing something and retrieving it later (like naming as many animals as you can, or remembering a pair you studied a minute ago). IQ tests measure them separately, so we do too.
Dailies

Every game has one daily challenge — the same for everyone in the world that day, so results are honestly comparable. Your day flips at midnight in your own timezone once you're registered (guests run on Michigan time). Solve it once; practice modes are unlimited.

Scoring & streaks

Each game measures what it can actually observe: moves and time in Risto, guesses in WordWise, a real puzzle rating in Chess, a graded ladder in Go, decision accuracy in Blackjack training. Play a game's daily on consecutive days (your calendar) and the streak grows.

Groups

Private groups only — family, friends, teams — joined by invite link, up to 50 people. When you finish a daily, a spoiler-free result card posts to your groups automatically (you can turn this off per group, pause it globally, or delete any card of yours). React, comment (mark spoilers!), and chat — chat is kept 90 days. A group streak counts days when at least 3 members played — nobody is ever the reason a streak died.

Names & accounts

Free to play: register with a name and email to keep scores, streaks, ratings, and groups on every device. Registered names are yours — nobody else can post under them. Accounts are for players 13 and up.

The Coach & your Brain Pulse

After every game the Coach shows what the stronger choice was and names the thinking skill involved. Your Brain Pulse tracks whether each of the seven thinking areas is advancing, steady, or idle — built only from your real play. It is never a clinical measure, and we will never claim a game raised your intelligence.

Blackjack

Strategy practice only: no money, no wagering, no casino anything — it's the purest expected-value training there is.

Fair play

Answers live on the server, never in your browser. Impossible scores are rejected automatically. Play fair; it's more fun when the numbers are true.

Risto — champion rules

The classic rules carry over from the original site: each level keeps its top 10 (one entry per player, your best), and you can only be champion of one level at a time — crowns are assigned top-down, and losing a crown restores you to your next-best level. You fall down the ladder, not off it.

🔒 Your scores are private

Your cognitive assessment results and personal scores are confidential and are never shared — not with other players, not with your groups, not publicly. Only you can see them. Percentile comparisons use anonymous totals only and never reveal anyone's individual score. (Game results post to a group only when you choose to turn sharing on for that group — and you can pause or turn it off anytime.)
