How to play N-Back
- Squares light up one at a time.
- Tap Match if this square is where one lit N steps back. In 1-back, that's the one just before.
- Otherwise, do nothing. A wrong tap costs as much as a miss.
- 4 short blocks, starting at 1-back. Do well and N goes up; slip and it goes down.
Controls. Tap the Match button, or press Space or M on a keyboard.
Scoring
Each block scores the share of matches you found minus the share of non-matches you tapped, so tapping everything or nothing scores zero. Your result is the highest level you reached and how many of the matches you found.
Strategy tips
- Say the last squares to yourself as a short rhythm (top left, centre, top left) and drop the oldest one each step instead of re-counting.
- Check the square from N steps back first, then look at the new one.
- If you lose the thread, wait for the next square and rebuild from there. One lost square is better than a run of wrong taps.
Streams are the same for everyone on the same day.
